Chasing the best SEG rate is usually the wrong goal
The Smart Export Guarantee pays you for electricity you send back to the grid. It sounds like the headline number is what matters — and every comparison table on the internet ranks by it. But export is the consolation prize. Every unit you export at 13p is a unit you could have kept and used later instead of buying it back at roughly 26p.
So the right order of operations is: store as much of your generation as you can, then pick the best export tariff for whatever genuinely spills over. That is why this page ranks tariffs but also tells you which ones actually reward battery owners — the time-of-use tariffs where you choose when you export.
The quick maths
Export 1,000 kWh at 13p = £130 a year. Store and self-consume the same 1,000 kWh and you avoid buying it at 26p = £260 a year. Same electricity, roughly double the value.

How to choose your SEG tariff
Solar only, no battery
You export a lot, so the flat rate matters. Take the highest open-to-all rate you qualify for — currently Fuse Energy at 13p. Only switch import supplier if the bundled deal beats it after you compare the import unit rate too.
Solar plus a battery
You will export far less, so the flat rate matters less than the import rate. Look at time-of-use export tariffs where you can discharge into peak slots, and prioritise a cheap overnight import tariff. Our savings calculator models both sides.
Battery, no solar
SEG is irrelevant — you have nothing to export and most SEG tariffs need an MCS-certified generator anyway. Your savings come entirely from charging cheap overnight and avoiding peak rates. See Economy 7 battery storage.
